McKinney Chiropractor;
Managing Stress Through the Holidays
Shared by Dr. Anthony Vasile
As a chiropractor I see stress all of the time as one of the main causes of tension which can lead to neck pain, headaches, and back pain. The holiday season is here. Sometimes we have great times with family and friends. Other times the holidays are not all harmony due to stress and potential conflict with family.
Many people travel to visit family. Airports and roads can be very hectic. One can help ease some of the stresses of travel by giving plenty of time to do so. Leave early because there is a good chance delays may occur. Sitting for long periods of time in the car or on a plane can also cause a lot of pain and discomfort. Bring a pillow for support on the plane and make sure to bring healthy snacks to help make the journey more pleasurable.
Eating over the holidays we definitely do. Eating well is not always the case. Most people including myself tend to overeat. Don’t get me wrong, I love to indulge. But, one tip I give to patients is making a green drink before or after a meal. This can help decrease the desire to eat as much. It also will help counteract some of the delicious inflammatory foods that will be consumed with family.
I know seeing family is great. I love when I get the chance to go back home to see everyone. But some families including mine can get to be a handful. There is always some sort of drama happening. The best advice I can give is to avoid conversations about politics or other controversial subjects. Stay present with your family and enjoy the short time together.
Do the best you can to eat well, move well and think well over this holiday season to stay out of pain and keep stress levels low. This will allow our bodies to stay more toward a state of homeostasis even during the stressful times of the holiday season.
