Raspberries Help Support Your Immune System
Raspberries hold a special place in my heart. It happens to be one of my daughter’s favorite foods and she never fails to put them on the tips of her fingers and eat them one by one. Sometimes the raspberries are claws and she will act like an animal, other times she acts like she hurt her finger and needs a band aid on them (because they’re red and everything red is just like blood). It’s always fun for me to play these games with her, but it’s also great because her choice of snack food is not only fun, it is healthy.
Raspberries have many health benefits, as do most berries in general. In particular, raspberries are high in vitamin C. This helps support our body’s immune system as well as aid in soft tissue repair. They also are low in sugar. This is not something you see as often with fruit as the sugars they have keep them sweet. Go figure. This is also one of the reasons I am so glad my daughter loves them. Besides being a sweet treat that isn’t too sweet, they are also high in antioxidants. Berries in general are typically high in antioxidants when help protect our body from harmful byproducts of oxidation reactions. These reactions come from many different body and environmental factors, but when they get high, they can cause rapid breakdown of our cells leading to inflammation and disease. It is why antioxidants can help reduce the risk of cancer. This is also how berries are able to aid with brain health as the oxidative stress can also increase the rate of Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Next time you’re in the mood for a snack, try listening to your inner child. Put some raspberries on your fingers and play with your food. Your body will enjoy it and, if I’m being honest, it’s fun!
