I’m going to start by letting you know that my daughter is a picky eater.  It has made it interesting to find what flavors she will enjoy to help her get the nutrients she needs.  Green smoothies have been a fantastic help for it, but she often likes to change it up and try some different ones.  Surprisingly, I hadn’t made a strawberry banana smoothie for her until recently.  Not sure why it didn’t cross my mind to make it as she enjoys eating both strawberries and bananas.  Plus, it just happens to be a classic fruit pairing for smoothies in general.

Now, let me explain the differences between this smoothie and the ones you find at a lot of smoothie shops.  Be sure to add greens, and a lot of them.  That’s the main difference.  While strawberries and bananas have sweetness and tartness to them, it is the micronutrients in the greens that are crucial to maintaining health.  This is how I am able to make sure my daughter gets the nutrients she needs as well as give me some peace by not having to fight with her on the taste.

Regardless of age, we all need to focus on adding more vegetables and fruits to our diets.  In both 2015 and 2019, the CDC reported that only one in ten adults met the daily requirements for vegetable and fruit intake.  1 in 10 adults!  If I can find ways to get a toddler to enjoy their health, you can too.  I will add the recipe I used below, but just remember the key point I mentioned above.  Start with the greens and build around them to ensure you get all the micronutrients you need.

 

Green Strawberry Banana smoothie

  • 1 cup spinach
  • ½ banana (frozen)
  • ½ cup strawberries
  • ¼ cup almonds
