Social Environment and It’s Impact on Our Health; Stay Social and Stress Less!
Humans are social animals. I think we all realize that. But if we are not social on a regular basis, can that have a negative impact on our health and well-being? According to the research I am discussing in this video, not only can it have a negative impact but it absolutely will. I talk a lot about homeostasis in all of the research that I review in these videos. In order to maintain homeostasis you have to eat the right stuff, get plenty of movement and exercise and equally as important as the previous two are managing and eliminating stress. Stress causes a release of certain hormones which are beneficial in the short term. Chronic stress starts to become an issue because these hormone are being released all the time and that is leading to chronic illness. These same hormones are released if we lack social interaction. The study shows how we can’t maintain homeostasis without social interaction. It increases our allostatic load when we have these hormones too often, much the way a bad diet or lack of exercise would (allostatic load is explained in the video). Health is all inclusive and we need to make sure to eat right, exercise daily, and manage our stress. Part of managing stress is having a sense of belonging and that is why social interaction is so important.
