Reduce Risk of Diabetes
Video by Dr. Bryan Stephens
In 2019, there were more than 37 million Americans that were diagnosed and living with diabetes. 37 MILLION! That’s over 11 percent of the entire US population! That becomes even more incredible when you realize that diabetes is a lifestyle disease. Type 2 diabetes comes from a mix of interrelated things concerning poor diet, not enough exercise, being overweight or obese, and high levels of stress. This in turn causes the cells in the body to become insulin resistant. Insulin is responsible for transporting glucose (sugar) from the blood into the cells to use as fuel. Along with the insulin resistance, the pancreas can also be affected to where it does not produce ample amounts of insulin to keep up with the high levels of sugar associated with the standard American diet (SAD). So how can we reduce our risk of diabetes?
Diet, exercise, and stress management are the keys. Getting a 30-minute brisk walk where you can talk but not necessarily sing can help reduce the risk of diabetes greatly. Whole food meals instead of highly processed meals are another way to help. That’s where the green smoothies can play a large role in helping keep you healthy. I included a recipe today with cinnamon because it can aid with blood sugar levels in those with type 2 diabetes as well. Plus, I like the taste of it when it’s mixed with the apples.
This is why we stress the importance of lifestyle and how it affects overall health. Our choices can either lead us in health, or towards disease. The choice at the end of the day is yours, but so are the results.
