Omega 3’s and Weight Loss

Understanding the connection between Omega 3’s and Weight Loss
One of the biggest topics patients ask me about on a regular basis is weight loss. Everyone understands that it is unhealthy to be overweight. What most don’t understand is that weight loss should be a side effect of living a healthy lifestyle. People are not overweight because of genetics. I am not saying genetics play 0 role, but what I am saying is that lifestyle is the main cause of obesity. We learn how and what to eat from our parents who learned it from their parents. If it is a Friday tradition to eat pizza, we can’t blame our genes for the effects of that pizza. An important part of our diet should be Omega-3 fatty acids. In this video I get into why Omega-3’s are important for decreasing your weight based off the study presented here by Li and Huang. But at the end of the day, the weight loss is a side effect of doing the right thing for your body. Omega-3’s are essential for lowering inflammation, inhibiting certain enzymes involved with fat usage and fat storage, and creating an overall healthy internal environment. By the way that healthy environment happens to increase weight loss and insulin sensitivity. If we make the right choices for our health by eating correctly for our species, moving and exercising more than we do, and managing our stress there are all kinds of health benefits ranging from weight loss, insulin sensitivity, clear skin, decreased chronic disease etc.
