New Year New You!
Video by Dr. Travis Downs
If you are like most Americans exercising more, eating healthier, and losing weight are the most common New Year’s goals. These goals account for roughly a third of all resolutions, according to a 2018 Marist Poll survey sponsored by NPR and PBS NewsHour. In the past, one study found that up to 73 percent of people who set fitness resolutions end up quitting before hitting their targets. This is one thing I always want to help my patients with and make sure they are not quitting before hitting their goals. One of the most common things we see in the office in the months of January and February is injuries from working out. This comes from people not following 3 simple rules.
- Don’t go too hard too fast
- Listen to your body, know when its soreness and don’t push through pain
- Get your spine checked to see if you have compensations
The first 2 rules are simple to follow but the third is the most important to avoid injury and achieve those new years goals. Most of the patients that come in with injuries have compensations from their spine not moving properly. This is a result of past accidents, repetitive motions, and I like to just call it life has happened. But whatever has caused the joints of the spine to get locked and not move properly the muscles will start to compensate. Your body can only compensate so long before it reaches a threshold and gives out and injury occurs. Therefore, always get your spine checked and get regular adjustments to avoid these compensation and injuries in the new year.
