As a Chiropractor, I have patients come in looking for the cause of their neck or back pain. Along with a physical exam, we also delve into their diet and nutrition.  Much of the chronic inflammation we experience stems from what we eat.  This article will be focusing on brussels sprouts, and I will be going over a research article showing how brussels sprouts can help to reduce cancer causing agents in the body. I have also included a great tasting recipe I use myself to make sure I’m getting my brussels sprouts in my diet.  Cruciferous vegetables have long been thought to have many health benefits. Brussel sprouts are loaded with vitamin c, omega 3’s, and cancer fighting glucosinates and are considered a super food. In a research article by Hans Verhagen et al, they showed that consuming 300g of brussels sprouts per day helped to reduce cancer causing agents in the body by 28% over a 3-week period.

In summary, brussels sprouts should be a staple in everyone’s diet for their health benefits and cancer fighting properties. Choosing smart recipes like this one is just one way we can make a healthy choice of what we are fueling our bodies with so that we can live the best lives we can. Ingredients
  • Brussels Sprouts Halved
  • Olive Oil
  • Kosher Salt
  • Black Pepper
  • Balsamic vinegar

 

Cooking Directions
  1. Heat the oil in a large cast iron pan, then add your Brussels sprouts. Cook undisturbed until caramelized.
  2. Add spices and stir. Continue to cook and stir until the Brussels sprouts are deep dark golden brown.
  3. Remove from the heat and stir in the vinegar. Add a handful of Parmesan cheese, nuts, or herbs, or enjoy them as they are.
