Core Stability

Video by Dr. Trenton Yeomans

In our clinics we see more people showing up with low back pain due to a variety of things that lead up to the point to where they bend over and try to pick up a chair and move it and now, they can’t move their back. While pain is a complex thing, we know one major component of it is core instability. In a study done by Akhtar et al. they wanted to compare the effectiveness of a core stabilization exercise routine and passive therapies such as a TENS unit or ultrasound vs regular physical therapy and passive modalities in treating nonspecific low back pain. They took 120 patients and divided them into two groups. Group one participated in 6-week core stabilization exercise program with passive therapies and group two did routine physical therapy and passive therapy. They tracked the progress with a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) which is a pain scale that measures 0-10 with 0 being no pain and 10 being the worst pain of your life. What they found was that in group one with the focus on core stabilization they decreased the VAS score on average by 3.08 and group two decreased on average by 1.71.

All the chiropractors at Texas Chiro Health understand the importance of core stabilization when dealing with low back pain, you must work all the muscles that go into stabilizing the spine and help support your body so we can help you live a healthier lifestyle.

“Low back pain is a frequent problem faced by the majority of people at some point in their lifetime. Exercise therapy has been advocated an effective treatment for chronic low back pain.” -Akhtar et al.

“The results of this study illustrate that clinical and therapeutic effects of core stabilization exercise program over the period of six weeks are more effective in terms of reduction in pain, compared to routine physical therapy exercise for similar duration.”

– Akhtar et al.
