Avoid Inflammation When Snacking
This is probably one of the easiest recipes for a healthy snack that you will ever see. Frozen grapes. The beauty of this is that I use it at my house for my daughters to snack on instead of reaching for chips, cookies, crackers, and every other unhealthy thing we find out there. By freezing the grapes, it changes their consistency and they turn more into a frozen treat instead of just the fruit in the bowl or the fridge. My youngest daughter has certainly developed an appetite for the grapes and I am more than happy to keep her stocked with healthy foods. The more healthy snacks I have on hand for her and the less we stock unhealthy foods, the easier the choice becomes for her.
This not only goes for children, but for adults as well. I was listening to a School of Greatness podcast recently and the guest explained it perfectly. It is too easy to reach for chips to snack on if they readily on hand at home. But, if they are still at the store and you have to put shoes on, get in the car, drive to the store, and purchase them every time you get a craving for chips, you find yourself craving them less and reaching for the fruits or whole foods that could be stocked at home instead. Those chips look awfully less appetizing when it takes that much work for only 1 bag of them. This shift in snacks helps lower the allostatic load, or stress, on the body which helps keep the inflammation that can lead to back pain down. It is why we focus on eating better along with our movement patterns and stress management when helping our patients get out of pain and stay out of pain. At the end of the day, it is your responsibility to take care of yourself, we just help keep you moving, educate you, and show you how.
