Brain Boosting Green Smoothie with Lion’s Mane

Video by Dr. Anthony Vasile

Foraging for mushrooms is an activity that I developed in my early 20’s. Growing up in the Appalachian Mountains I would always see mushrooms while walking around in the forest but it wasn’t until I got older that I started to get interested in identifying them. As I did research, I learned that a lot of wild mushrooms not only taste delicious and unique but they also hold many amazing health benefits. One mushroom that is easy to identify and also quite beautiful is the lion’s mane mushroom.

Lion’s mane is a gourmet mushroom and when cooked properly is absolutely scrumptious. Lion’s mane mushrooms are increasingly sold by restaurants and some grocery stores. This nutritious mushroom is roughly 20 percent protein and is one of the few mushrooms that can taste like lobster or shrimp (Stamets, 2005). It not only tastes great, but it has many health properties especially when it comes to brain health. Lion’s mane mushrooms are increasingly studied for their neuroprotective effects. It contains neurotrophic properties which has been shown to actually regrow neural tissue. A 2012 study conducted in Malaysia found that consuming lion’s mane mushroom could actually regenerate damaged cells from peripheral nerve injury, an injury affecting the delicate tissue between your brain and spinal cord.

I have learned a lot about mushrooms from a man named Paul Stamets. He is one of the most knowledgeable people in the world about mushrooms. He has many patents for their health benefits, and I recommend to anyone to check out his website https://fungi.com/. It is loaded with great supplements and research.

I have created a green drink recipe that includes lion’s mane. You can think of it as a brain boosting smoothie. Remember eating well is just one of the 3 factors that guides the body to a state of homeostasis. Keep your spine healthy by getting regular adjustments and I encourage you to give this recipe a try.
