Improve Balance with Foot Exercises to Reduce Low Back Pain

Balance for Low Back Pain

Video by Dr. Bryan Stephens

When going through a movement or feeling low back pain, most patients at our McKinney clinic are focused on where the pain is.  What many don’t realize is how many other muscles and body parts are used to make specific motions.  It is why a disruption in one part of the body can cause pain in another part.  This process of everything being connected and utilized to make certain movements is called the kinetic chain.

A disruption in the kinetic chain can lead to imbalances that are repeated until it affects the posture and muscle tone.  At that point, the body has essentially been trained to do a motion the wrong way.  Over time, this increases inflammation in the affected areas that builds until the pain threshold is reached and the nerve begins firing pain receptors up to the brain.  For example, a restriction in the foot and ankle causes a change through the knee and hip.  This in turn affects the pelvis and spine to help keep the body upright and the eyes level on the horizon.  By doing this, tension builds up throughout different sides of the spine and can cause low back pain.

Reviewed studies have linked flat feet, ankle instability, sagittal plane blockage and excessive pronation to [low back pain]”

“…ankle and foot deviations can be considered a potential cause for LBP due to the disruption of the kinetic chain from the foot to the back.”

This is one of the reasons why our Chiropractors evaluate the gait and balance of patients when they come in for low back pain.  Often times, foot strengthening and ankle stability is needed in addition to core and back stability exercises after restoring segmental motion with the adjustment.  This way the body can heal as a whole rather than only in parts which can allow the low back pain to come back later.
