Avoid Neck & Upper Back Pain

While Sitting at Your Desk

Video by Dr. Erik Waldeland

Being aware of your posture, according to the research, can be one piece of the puzzle when it comes to someone having neck and upper back pain while sitting at work.  It can be very easy for us to allow our bodies to slouch forward, putting stress and tension on the joints and muscles of the neck and upper back.  It is our job to ensure you having proper muscle activation with those postural muscles, but we also need to ensure your joints of the neck and upper back are going through a full range of motion consistently so that your body does not adapt to that poor postural position. Below are a couple key findings from the research that support why we should be more aware of our posture throughout the day.

“Habitual postural patterns are associated with musculoskeletal pain, and improving a maladaptive posture requires postural awareness in order to lead to clinical improvements”

“Self-reported postural awareness is associated with clinical symptoms in chronic pain patients; improvements in postural awareness are longitudinally associated with reduced pain in patients with spinal/shoulder pain”

Postural awareness and body position can be one key factor in people getting out of pain and being more comfortable at work.  Our main goal is to ensure not only that your muscles are activating and holding your structure well, but also that your joints and functioning and moving sufficiently to support you if you are sitting for long periods of time.
